Venice has postponed its plans to charge day-visitors a tourism tax in its fight against overtourism, according to Euronews.
The change comes at the very last minute, as the city’s authorities had previously said the system would be trialled in June 2022, as reported in Travel News, here. However, the authorities voted to delay the introduction of the fee until January 16, 2023, postponing it due to the two years of the pandemic.
The idea of taxing day-visitors was conceived and set in motion before the pandemic – the city fathers say the tax is necessary for curbing the overwhelming number of day-trippers visiting the historic centre.
The entrance fee will be applicable to visitors arriving in Venice for the day, and is set be around €3 – €10 (R53 – R176). Travellers who book to stay overnight in a hotel in the historic centre are exempt from the day-visitors’ tourism tax, as they already pay a city tax of up to €5 (R84) a night.
