ATNS-related disruption hits George

FlySafair and Airlink flights to and from George on January 12 were delayed and cancelled due to an ongoing suspension of Instrument Landing System (ILS) flight procedures for the airport’s runway 11.

Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) notified airlines and passengers that George Airport was experiencing flight disruptions due to severe weather conditions, including rain, strong winds and a low cloud base.

ATNS confirmed that runway 11’s ILS flight procedures are still under maintenance.

FlySafair was forced to cancel 10 flights on January 12. “These cancellations are a direct result of suspended procedures caused by ATNS’s failure to renew the necessary approvals in time. While the circumstances are beyond our control, we have taken swift action to mitigate the inconvenience by adding extra flights and offering support to affected customers,” FlySafair said in a notice.

According to Mphilo Dlamini, Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications at ATNS Head Office, the delay in obtaining approval for the ILS flight procedure for runway 11 at George Airport is being addressed.

“I am pleased to report that the necessary surveys are being finalised by the airport and soon ATNS will obtain the necessary approvals,” said Dlamini, adding that no definite date could be confirmed at this stage.
