Barcelona approves yearly tourist tax increase

The Barcelona City Council has approved a plan to raise the city's tourist tax by €1 (R21) annually until it reaches €8 (R166) in 2029.

The measure approved will see the levy rise to €5 (R103) in 2026, €6 (R124) in 2027, €7 (R145) in 2028 and €8 (R166) in 2029, doubling the city's current tax of €4 (R83).

This is in addition to the regional Catalan tourist tax, which varies according to the type of accommodation. Travellers are paying up to €7 (R145) per night depending on accommodation type, meaning some tourists could face a total charge of €12 (R249) next year.

According to Catalan News, the announcement was made after a council session last week.
