Local is lekker this festive season

SOUTH AFRICANS enjoy
travelling on a whim
– taking short road
trips over two to three days,
with little advance planning,
according to research done
by accommodation website,
SafariNow. Tom Williams,
coo at SafariNow, says
people are opting for more
affordable and family-friendly
destinations this December.
The majority of the 20 most
popular towns are on the
coast, with the only noncoastal
towns being Bela
Bela in Limpopo and Hazyview
in Mpumalanga. Topping the
list is Margate, the cheapest
option, with an average
price per person per night of
R357, followed by Ballito and
Umhlanga, with an average
per person per night price of
R720 and R790 respectively.
Local travellers also love
to visit Knysna, Mossel Bay,
Blouberg and Plettenberg Bay,
the research suggests. Ponta
do Ouro in Mozambique and
Swakopmund in Namibia
are popular self-driving
destinations for adventurehungry
South Africans.
Tom points out that people
from Gauteng are the most
active travellers across all
provinces, making up 80%
of the visitors to KwaZulu
Natal alone. Western Cape
residents come second
and tend to favour closer
locations such as Hermanus,
Langebaan and the
Wilderness.
