Mozambique’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Carlos Mesquita announced on Monday, that Maputo International Airport has improved its ability to accept commercial flights, as its runway received certification for larger planes, such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus 380.
Mesquita made the announcement during a hand-over ceremony in Maputo, where he received the ‘Category Four’ certificate from the Mozambican Civil Aviation Institute Chief, João de Abreu.
According to the Minister, the certification will enable the country to attract more international traffic, as airlines will benefit from reduced insurance costs, since the airport met advanced safety requirements, resulting in it being classified as low-risk.
According to Lusa, Maputo International Airport has benefitted from a series of improvements, including navigation aid systems, with R915 million invested in the control tower alone, as well as a new fuel supply system, runway rehabilitation and the construction of a ramp for freighters and other special aircraft.
