Air Mauritius is considering adding smaller narrowbody aircraft to its fleet as part of a long-term strategy aimed at improving operational efficiency.
Air Mauritius CEO André Viljoen said smaller Airbus A321 LRs or Boeing MAX 8 or 10s, would be better suited for services to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Kuala Lumpur and Mumbai instead of the current wide body Airbus A330-200 and 900 NEOs.
“The smaller gauge of the narrow body aircraft creates the opportunity to serve these destinations with more flights per day/week rather than the larger aircraft,” said Viljoen on LinkedIn.
Air Mauritius currently operates 11 aircraft – four Airbus A350-900s, two Airbus A330-900 NEOs, one Airbus A330-200 and four ATR-600s.
Three additional Airbus A350-900s are planned for delivery in December 2026, the first quarter of 2028 and the last quarter of 2028, respectively.
“The primary purpose of our network review is to develop a ‘5 plus 5 year’ (10 year) improvement and growth network plan. This includes a full aircraft fleet plan to fully align with our network,” said Viljoen.
