New ticketing system for Machu Picchu

Peru is introducing a new ticketing system for entry to Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail Network, replacing the existing three-hour reservation period with a direct sales process.

Under the new system, visitors will have 15 minutes to complete their purchase. Once payment has been confirmed, the ticket will be assigned and issued in the visitor’s name. Unpaid tickets will immediately return to the pool of available tickets, preventing uncompleted reservations from restricting availability.

This decision was made after it was discovered that a large number of tickets held online were never purchased, while others were being blocked for resale.

Peru’s Ministry of Culture said the changes would not affect the admission capacity of Machu Picchu or the Inca Trail but rather improve how available tickets were sold and allocated.
