The management and staff of the Protea Hotel Balalaika in Sandton took the ALS ice
bucket challenge to a new level on September 1. An entire pool was filled with ice
and the willing management and staff of the Balalaika jumped into the icy pool, fully
dressed in their suits and uniforms. The goal was to raise awareness and funds for the
International Alliance of ALS/MND, which supports sufferers of motor neuron disease.
All participants donated R100 towards the charity, with the Balalaika matching
whatever was raised on the day. A total of R5 000 was donated to ALS
