Vienna plans to increase tourist tax

Vienna is planning to increase its tourist tax for overnight stays, starting December 1, ahead of the Christmas holidays.

The levy is expected to jump from 3,2% to 8,5% of the room cost per night. The city expects the figures will raise an extra €81 million (R1,6 billion) each year.

Vienna’s Finance City Councillor, Barbara Novak, attributed the increase to the rising cost of the city’s infrastructure as well as other things.

For example, a room costing €200 (R4 105) a night will incur a tax of around €17 (R350) per night instead of €6,40 (R130), according to Tourism Review News.
