The opening of New York John F. Kennedy International Airport’s New Terminal One has been delayed to the first quarter of 2027.
The US$9,5 billion (R164bn) development was previously expected to open this year. The terminal operator said additional time was needed to complete construction, testing and operational preparations before welcoming passengers.
The first phase will open with 13 gates and one temporary gate. Once operational, the existing Terminal 1 will be demolished to make way for the second phase, which will add a further nine gates.
On completion, the 241 500 sqm terminal will have 23 gates, including 22 capable of handling widebody aircraft. It will also feature more than 27 800 sqm of retail, dining and lounge space.
Airlines set to operate from the terminal include Air France, KLM, Etihad Airways, Turkish Airlines, Air New Zealand, Air China, EVA Air, LOT Polish Airlines and Philippine Airlines.
The New Terminal One forms part of JFK’s wider redevelopment programme, which also includes the construction of Terminal 6.
