Kenya Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe is urging caution in the wake of new COVID-19 infections in the East African nation, and has reinstated the country’s indoor mask mandate.

This applies to all closed or confined spaces, such as in public-service vehicles, aircraft, offices, supermarkets, and places of worship.

“This sharp rise in numbers of new infections should mean something to our country – that we must once again take urgent steps to prevent the slide into a crisis like the one we experienced in 2020 and 2021 when we lost many lives and resources,” says Kagwe.

All in-person indoor meetings and events may continue at full capacity, as long as all the participants are fully vaccinated and wear a facemask.

The country has experienced a rise in new cases of COVID-19 in recent days, with Monday (June 20) reporting 246 new cases from a sample size of 1 993 tests, translating to a positivity rate of 12,6%.

Only 31,5% of adults in Kenya are fully vaccinated.
