Mafuko, from the Bageni mountain gorilla family in the DRC’s Virunga National Park, recently gave birth to extremely rare twins.
The park’s trackers recently captured a video of the new mom with the twins, in the company of the silverback, Kanamaharagi. See the video here.
The new additions see the Bageni family grow to 59 individuals, making it the largest mountain gorilla family in Virunga.
Twin births among mountain gorillas are rare and present additional challenges, particularly during the early months when infants are entirely dependent on their mother for care and transport. Virunga has committed to providing additional monitoring and protection measures to support the twins and their mother during this critical period.
