The National Geographic Museum of Exploration in Washington DC is set to welcome its first guests when it opens on June 26.
The 130-year-old campus underwent a $300 million (R4,9 billion) revitalisation and renovation project to turn it into an immersive museum experience.
The Museum of Exploration will feature a collection of interactive and educational experiences. Highlights include:
- The Archives exhibition, which celebrates the Society’s legacy of storytelling;
- The Rolex Explorers Landing, which showcases National Geographic Explorers’ journeys of creation;
- The Photo Ark: Animals of Earth temporary exhibition, which will offer guests a 360-degree view of different wildlife around the world;
- In Focus - Photographs of National Geographic, a collection of the Society’s most powerful images.
The Explorers Eatery will be an international food hall delivering a globally inspired culinary experience.
Exhibit signage throughout the museum will be available in English and Spanish, with Braille messaging available at key wayfinding points. Captioning, visual descriptions and American Sign Language will be featured in media throughout the experience. Additionally, a selection of tactile photographs will be included in the ‘In Focus’ gallery.
General admission for the Museum of Exploration starts at $30 (R495) for adults, with dynamic pricing anticipated to launch prior to the grand opening.
