Snow holidays require smarter travel insurance

SNOW holidays may be exciting and memorable experiences, but they also come with risks that differ significantly from those of a beach or city holiday. When something goes wrong, whether it is an injury on the slopes, severe weather disruption or lost gear, the financial and medical consequences can be far more serious. “Because snow holidays often require dedicated winter sports benefits, Bryte offers plans that cater for these needs,” Anrieth Symon, Head of Travel at Bryte, told Travel News. “Useful benefits may include cover for snow- related disruption events, such as piste closures, avalanches or landslides, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy. For this reason, having appropriate travel insurance in place is essential.” She added that common snow holiday-related claims include injuries such as fractures and sprains, emergency medical treatment, evacuation from the mountain, lost or delayed baggage containing ski gear, damage to owned or hired equipment and reimbursement for the unused portion of pre- booked arrangements such as ski lift passes, lessons and equipment hire when a trip is interrupted. Symon further explained that travel insurance was designed to protect travellers against unexpected events that might affect their trip, including medical emergencies, accidents, cancellations, delays and lost luggage. “For snow holidays, these risks are often heightened, and even a relatively minor incident can become complex and costly.” One of the most important elements of winter sport travel cover is emergency medical and evacuation assistance. “In the event of an accident, this support helps ensure that travellers receive appropriate care and, where necessary, are transported safely to a suitable medical facility,” said Symon. Despite increased awareness, a few key misconceptions remain. “Travel insurance does not replace medical aid or personal insurance, and not all activities are automatically covered. Travellers need to ensure that their policy includes the specific activities they plan to participate in.” For this reason, understanding the policy is just as important as having one. “Travellers should always review both their travel insurance certificate and policy wording, as these documents set out the benefits, limits and important conditions that apply to their cover. “Ultimately, ski holidays require a more considered approach. With the right travel insurance in place and a clear understanding of what is covered, travellers can focus on enjoying the slopes, knowing they are supported should the unexpected happen,” said Symon.
