Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) introduced the first of two newly acquired Embraer 190 aircraft into commercial service in August, coinciding with the launch of a new identity, Air Mozambique, as the national carrier seeks to rebuild its operational capacity.
Named “Limpopo”, the aircraft operated its first commercial flight on the Maputo-Nacala route and has now joined the airline’s fleet. The second aircraft, “Zambeze”, is expected to enter service on the Maputo-Beira route at a later stage.
The airline said in a press release that Air Mozambique has been designed to represent a more modern, efficient and competitive company focused on passengers’ needs.
Speaking at a ceremony in Nacala, Mozambique’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, João Matlombe, said the developments are part of the government’s efforts to restore LAM’s operational capacity and improve mobility within the country.
He said the airline’s recovery process also includes internal reorganisation, cost control, improvements to management models, streamlining operations and strengthening operational discipline.
Matlombe said the new identity needs to be accompanied by changes in customer service culture, including greater emphasis on ethics, empathy, discipline, communication with passengers and adherence to schedules. When delays occur, passengers should receive adequate information and assistance, he added.
